ECN-ACEDE Reading Group

The ECN-ACEDE reading group is a virtual reading group focused on topics in Economics and Business Administration, which meets monthly. It has two main objectives. First, it aims to train young ACEDE scholars by passing on the latest advances in their field of knowledge and to develop their critical thinking by discussing relevant and recent articles in a friendly and stimulating environment. Second, it seeks to foster a community of scholars interested in these topics and to promote interaction among them.

Instructions for preparing a discussion

Presenters can select papers that fall within the general area of Economics and Business Administration and that have been published within the last 3 years. To ensure a high level of quality and suitability for the audience, the papers to be presented must be chosen from those published in a selected number of academic journals and working papers listed below. Each reading session consists of two parts: (1) a 30-40 minute presentation; and (2) a 20-30 minute general discussion.

Presenters must prepare slides to stimulate discussion.

Presentations should follow some common guidelines. In the first part of the talk, presenters should provide a concise and clear summary of the paper by addressing, among others, the following questions:

  1. What is the research question and why is it interesting? That is, how does it improve our understanding of some important topics?
  2. What theory is the work based on/exploiting/developing?
  3. What is the method and what are the data used?
  4. Does the work revolve around a causal relationship? If so, what are the main
  5. threats to causality and what do the authors do about it?
  6. What are the main findings?

In the second part of the talk, the presenter should offer their own opinion on some of the main aspects addressed in the paper. Typical questions to be answered include (but are not limited to):

  1. What is truly exciting/new/original about the paper?
  2. Why was the paper published: what elements made it stand out for the journal (e.g., theoretical contribution, approach, methods, data, phenomenon)?
  3. What are the main limitations of the work?
  4. How could we answer the same question differently?
  5. What would be the ideal experiment considering the research question and the available data?
  6. What are your ideas for related future work?
