Seminar Programme

This seminar will explore in depth the process of submitting and reviewing academic articles through the exchange of ideas and open dialogue between a researcher facing their first review as a first or sole author and an experienced editor.

1. Author’s Presentation (30 mins)

  • The initial submission
  • Choosing the journal.
  • Preparing the submission.
  • Cover letter.

The first review. The author will share their experience from two perspectives:

  • Formal perspective: organisation of the work, prioritisation of objectives, time management, responding to reviewers, use of AI as a tool during the review process.
  • Emotional perspective: first impressions, managing pressure, anxiety, the widespread ‘imposter syndrome’ among early-career researchers.

2. Editor’s Presentation (30 mins)

The initial submission:

  • What does an editor value most in a manuscript?
  • How is the quality of an article assessed?
  • Common mistakes leading to rejection.
  • How does an editorial team select reviewers?

The first review:

  • How should one respond to reviewers?
  • Most common errors leading to rejection.

3. Open discussion and questions from the audience (30 mins).
